Big Dreams -

'The Tale of the Tower' and 'The Isle of Groans'

“We have worked with the community group at Causeway, helping them develop their own minidreamworlds.

The minidreamworlds project is about the creation of miniature worlds, inspired by ideas of memory, time and place, which are then re-represented through being digitally photographed, filmed, edited and manipulated.

For our commission we have developed the minidreamworlds theme from our own perspectives as artists, combining our skills and visions to produce a unique digital film that explores notions of scale, place, memory, consciousness and time. We have developed our film through a process of collaboration, friction and an associative generation of ideas.

The aim is to catalyse our combined interests in taxidermy, the museum diorama, wunderkammer, kinetics, nature and artifice, robotics, alchemy and electricity."

'The Tale of the Tower' by Richard Brown is a computer animated Grimm-like tale about an inventor living on a remote Scottish island.

'The Isle of Groans' by Andrea Roe is a journey through both a natural and unnatural world where rabbits live underground with puffins and a Fire-Blower.

Techniques

"We have created small scale models of real and fantasy places which have been filmed using specialist camera techniques. These films have been recombined with footage of existing scenarios, places, people and animals to produce a surreal contrast of nature and artifice, an alteration of perspective and scale, merging the real and the imaginary.

An important aspect in our work has been the use of camera techniques that imbue an otherworldly aspect, a sense of dreaming, creating a suspension of disbelief through tightly controlled camera movements, editing techniques, superimpositions and overlays.

Other techniques include the use of sound, motor controlled sets and cameras, macro lens detail, microscopic obsessions, light, texture, flow and movement."

The films are available in the Barrhead and Neilston libraries.
