"By working with the artists I have gained new skills, self esteem, new ideas, a different approach, enthusiasm and friends."

JONATHAN OWEN

Artist’s Commission Project

“I intend to make a wall painting. This will be my own individual work, located in a public building in Barrhead, and will be in some way connected to ideas and subjects that emerge during the workshops with the Unity Enterprise group. I intend to find a venue which has relevance to the members of the group so that the piece can be seen by them when they use the building.”

Barrhead Sports Centre

Jonathan chose the walls of the cafe area of Barrhead Sports Centre as the final location for his artwork.

The images in the main mural depict hands holding fragments from the temporary window-grille sculptures he installed in the Sports Centre over the summer 2005.  An image of this installation can be seen in the framed photograph by the windows.

The fragments resemble letters or characters from an unknown alphabet.  Jonathan has painted each one to appear as though they spell out a proverb, motto or slogan.  It's up to you to decide what they say!

The smaller mural depicts a laurel wreath held aloft.  "This image appeared on a number of occasions in the paintings I made with the members of the Unity Enterprise group."
